Beagle Elementary school holds a science night once a year and on March 18th the YCC participated by making liquid nitrogen ice cream for the kids along with coffee filter paper chromatography. We made four batches of ice cream over a two hour span and about 200 kids were there.

On Wednesday, March 9, 2016, a total of 47 students from 4 local high schools (East Lansing, Holt, Lansing Catholic and Okemos) participated in the MSU hosted Chemistry Olympiad. The day began with a two hour written exam followed by a Chemical Demonstration Show by Jim Geiger and an awards ceremony.

Girl’s Math and Science Day is an event set up by the Michigan State University Graduate Women in Science Chapter. This event involves 6th to 8th grade girls who rotate through different STEM related activities set up by various groups on campus.
Balancing Act is the activity set up by YCC in which students built chemical formulas of reactions using play-dough to demonstrate how mass is conserved as well as to demonstrate how to balance chemical equations.

The ACS Webinar program holds two YCC-specific webinars per year. The webinar this semester was “The Role of Chemistry in Global Security.” We learned about some history of chemical and biological weapons, computer modeling to show effects of bioterrorism, and real life scenarios in which scientists worked with the government to respond to a potential threat.
