Girl’s Math and Science Day is an event set up by the Michigan State University Graduate Women in Science Chapter. This event involves 6th to 8th grade girls who rotate through different STEM related activities set up by various groups on campus.

Balancing Act is the activity set up by YCC in which students built chemical formulas of reactions using play-dough to demonstrate how mass is conserved as well as to demonstrate how to balance chemical equations.

Donley Elementary school holds a science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) night once a year and the YCC participated by making liquid nitrogen ice cream for the kids. We made four batches of ice cream over a two hour span and about 150 kids were there.

The ACS Webinar program holds two YCC-specific webinars per year. The webinar this semester was “The Role of Chemistry in Global Security.” We learned about some history of chemical and biological weapons, computer modeling to show effects of bioterrorism, and real life scenarios in which scientists worked with the government to respond to a potential threat. There was a follow-up session in which students could ask questions to the presenters, such as finding careers in security research.

The Glencairn Elementary fourth grade classes had just finished a lesson on states of matter. To provide some fun supplementary lessons, YCC brought hands-on demos about the states of matter. We talked about phase changes and froze rubber ducks with liquid nitrogen. The students were asked to explain the properties of goop (cornstarch and water) and slime (borax-glue mixture) and classify them as solids or liquids to practice being scientists.

YCC Battle of the Chem Clubs (1/30/2016)

The 9th annual Battle of the Chemistry Clubs was held at Michigan State University. We had a record number of thirteen undergraduate teams attending to compete in a variety of chemistry related activities, including periodic table trivia cornhole, glassware identification relays, titration races, a zombie apocalypse, and Jeopardy! Wayne State University ultimately won the Silver Sep Funnel. The event allowed the chemistry groups and the YCC graduate students to network and share ideas. We also collected monetary donations for the Flint Water Fund.
